North East Network, in collaboration with the Inspector of Schools, Kamrup Metro, Government of Assam, recently organised a sensitisation programme which was attended by representatives from 116 Government High and Higher Secondary Schools from the district of Kamrup Metro. This programme was graced by Tapashi Sarma, District Programme Officer, Samagra Shiksha Assam. The sensitisation programme provided clarity on various aspects, such as different forms of sexual harassment, procedures to handle complaints, and the significant role of educational institutions in addressing these issues. For many participants, this was their first sensitisation programme on this crucial subject. The training was conducted by Anurita Pathak, Executive Director (in-charge) of NEN and Rashmi Rekha Bora, Project Lead of NEN Assam.
Understanding and addressing sexual harassment in the workplace is crucial for creating a safe environment for women and girls. North East Network has conducted this sensitisation programme as a proactive step towards ensuring that educational institutions in Kamrup Metro are equipped to handle issues of sexual harassment against women effectively. By educating school representatives on the legal aspects, NEN aims to foster a culture of safety and support within schools.
This programme has led to the formation of Internal Committees in each participating school as per provisions of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act. This initiative is part of NEN’s broader commitment to promoting gender equality and safeguarding the rights of women in the workplace.
