Mahila Kisan Adhikar Manch (Forest Rights Thematic Group) with its North East members conducted a consultation workshop to explore concerns/ issues of forest rights and women, in diverse context of the NER. The 2 days workshop at Guwahati brought together groups working with forest communities, activists, scholars who shared experiences, discussed issues, and developed a set of action for the women collectives and communities for future. 43 participants attended the programme including representatives from Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya and Nagaland.
Resource Persons: Dr. O. Sunanda Devi, Scientific Officer, Assam State Biodiversity Board, 2 members from National Facilitation Team, and Soma KP and Rukmini- MAKAAM.
Outcomes: The consultation (1) enhanced participants understanding on women’s and indigenous people’s rights to forest rights in context of the NER (2) created awareness on The Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006 and others (3) strengthen our alliance in the NER and (4) paved way for future action plans in collecting evidence/documentation on implementation of Govt policies/programmes related to forests, livelihoods and gender.
