North East Network has been propagating the formulation of a State Policy for Women in Assam. A gender responsive, gender sensitive and gender inclusive Policy would provide a broad guideline within the framework of due diligence to promote and protect rights of women. We believe that public responsibility and state accountability are key to achieving and promoting equal rights and opportunities for all women.
A State Policy for Women with adequate budgetary allocation, convergence of concerned state government departments and a dedicated task force with highly experienced individuals from both government and society are much needed. Women members must constitute half of such a task force.
Based on our ground experiences regarding the need for a Policy, we have submitted appeals and memorandums to local government agencies especially during significant Days and Campaigns since 2018 , impressing upon agencies to bring the Policy into effect.
