North East Network, a women’s rights organization, is part of the Lam-Lynti Chittara Neralu (LCN), a National Network working on shelters for Women Survivors of Violence, funded by American Jewish World Service. Lam-Lynti Chittara Neralu or LCN (which translates to ‘lead the way to shelter under the vista of the stars’ in Khasi, Telugu and Kannada) is a national network of over 50 organisations, that aims to ensure rights-based and inclusive shelter homes for women and transgender survivors of violence. With a genesis in two meetings held in 2016, of like-minded feminist groups working to end VAW, its shared vision is to preconceive shelters as open, positive spaces that offer care and ensure a rights-based support system for women and girls, and strengthen provisions of and around shelter homes across the country. LCN reflects regional diversity and collaboration within the network, and an aspiration to assist in making shelters positive and empowering spaces offering rights-based support systems for women and transgender persons.
As NEN-LCN strives to strengthen stakeholder’s response to address and redress VAW & C, NEN conducted a one-and-a-half-day training of the Swadhar Grehs’ Staffs, in the West Khasi Hills Districts of Meghalaya on the 1st and 2nd of December 2022 respectively, so as to strengthen their response to women and children survivors of violence who avail shelter home services.
The training session was a great opportunity to learn from experts on the matter of responding to violence faced by women and children by Shelter Home staff. The training will go a long and necessary way in the improvement of understanding and responding to violence against women and children by the Shelter Home staff. NEN believes that the training will help the staff of these shelter homes strengthen the care and support they offer to survivors.
