Menstrual Hygiene Day is an annual campaign observed every 28th of May to raise awareness about menstrual health and hygiene, break myths and taboos surrounding menstruation and end discrimination faced by menstruating individuals irrespective of age and identity. This year, in line with the global theme “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld”, NEN has taken steps to ensure that girls and women of all identities have access to information regarding menstrual health and hygiene.
Around 600 participants from six districts of Assam – Darrang, Dhemaji, Golaghat, Kamrup (R), Sonitpur and Udalguri, took part in the campaign organized by NEN to celebrate Menstrual Hygiene Day. The initiative, held in collaboration with educational institutions, engaged students, teachers, NEN youth collective and peer leaders, with activities aimed at breaking the silence around menstrual health and hygiene. Trained youth collective members from NEN led our campaign, creating powerful wall murals on gender equality and menstrual health. Educational materials on menstrual health, developed by NEN youth collective and peer educators, were also released during this campaign.
In Nongshillong, around 40 participants from the villages of Umsaw, Khartein, Wahliewlong, Mawlai Syiem, Laitkseh, Nongdom Laitmilang, Nongshillong, Mawkohngei, Langlew, and Marngor joined North East Network to break the silence around menstrual health. With insightful sessions led by Dr M Pasi from Pariong PHC and Iaimanda Ryngksai, State Coordinator of NEN Meghalaya, initiatives were taken to address myths and misconceptions, promoting menstrual health awareness through interactive activities and film screening.
