To mark the launch of eco-tourism initiatives led by women, North East Network (NEN), Meghalaya, in collaboration with the Dorbar Shnong of Wahliewlong and Khartein, Eastern West Khasi Hills (EWKH), organised the Ri-Saw Kun Festival. In the earthy terrains of Wahliewlong, EWKH, around 260 participants gathered to celebrate community, culture, and nature.

The event commenced with a warm welcome address by Shri Kusmanroy Thabah, Secretary of Wahliewlong, followed by a heartfelt welcome song performed by the youth of Khartein. The festival resonated with the rich oral traditions of the region as Smt. Justina Marwein and Shri Phridolin Marwein shared stories about the origins of Wahliewlong and Khartein, respectively. These oral narratives passed down through generations, sparked appreciation among the listeners.

Ryngksai, NEN’s State Coordinator, spoke about the background of the eco-tourism initiative and introduced the Joint Action Committee (JAC), highlighting its involvement during the early stages of the project. Fellows from Greenhub-Responsible Tourism also shared a short talk on eco-tourism and screened a film titled Laitkynsew – Where Nature and Well-being Unite.
The festival was filled with cultural performances including traditional dances by women from Khartein and Laitkseh and by youth from Wahliewlong. A song performance by Pariong Secondary School added to the festive spirit. Notable performances were also presented by the Department of Music, Martin Luther Christian University, Na Rep Group, and Josephas Thongnibah. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Shri Sirian Pariong, Headman of Khartein village.
The Ri-Saw Kun Festival not only celebrated the spirit of eco-tourism but also marked a step towards bringing rural women to the forefront, preserving indigenous knowledge systems, and nurturing sustainable, community-led development in the hills of Meghalaya.
