As Assam prepares for the 2026 Legislative Assembly elections, the Assam Feminist Manifesto Collective is raising a collective call for justice, equality, and dignity.
The Feminist Manifesto represents the voices and demands of women from diverse backgrounds—including farmers, vendors, domestic workers, weavers, survivors of violence, micro-entrepreneurs, tea garden workers, and women from the Char areas of Assam, as well as persons from diverse gender and sexual identities and women with disabilities. Developed through consultations with grassroots groups, organisations, and individuals, the manifesto reflects lived realities and urgent priorities.
Women constitute nearly 1.80 crore rights-holding citizens of Assam. As voters and as equal participants in democracy, they demand that the next government secure and advance their rights. Ahead of the election, the collective calls upon all political parties and candidates to listen to women’s voices and commit to concrete steps towards gender equality.
Despite numerous schemes introduced in the name of women’s development, many marginalised women continue to face structural barriers that limit their access to health, education, employment, justice, and social protection. Administrative hurdles and deep-rooted inequalities often prevent policies from translating into meaningful change in women’s everyday lives.
The manifesto also reiterates a key demand raised earlier: the creation of a comprehensive state policy or framework for women in Assam that ensures coordinated and accountable action across government departments.
