Safe City Initiative by NEN: The survey report by North East Network entitled Towards a Safer City for Women revealed different forms of sexual harassment in public places. 72.5 % women in Guwahati face different kinds of sexual harassment. We have now moved the report to the next level to assess city infrastrsucture which leads to women feeling unsafe. In this context, NEN has planned to i) conduct safety audits and ii) focus group discussions to get deeper insights on issues of harassment and violence faced by women and its link with urban planning and governance.To conduct safety audits, NEN will use a new tool called Safetipin which is a mobile app and maps information about safety in an area. NEN has also partnered with CEPT University, Ahmedabad to understand various dimensions of women’s safety in relation to accessing and using transport by conducting FGDs in selected localities of Guwahati city. Both safety audits and FGDs will be conducted from April to September, 2014.
