Laitlin Lyngdoh Nonglait
From Grassroots Leadership to Sustainable Community Impact

In the serene hills of Meghalaya lies the village of Nongshillong – home to a woman whose leadership gently challenges conventional ideas of education and power.
Today, we spotlight the journey of Laitlin Lyngdoh Nonglait, who is a powerful leader, a resilient community worker and a woman who leads with heart. Born into a modest family in Nongshillong, Laitlin grew up amid financial constraints that forced her to discontinue her education after Class 9.
From a young age, Laitlin showed signs of being a natural leader. She was never afraid to speak up, take responsibility, or stand firm in her beliefs. Whether within her family or the wider community, she became someone people relied on for advice, support, and action. Early responsibilities and community realities gave her a deep understanding of the social and cultural fabric of her village.
After marriage, she was blessed with four children and supported by a devoted husband and nurturing family. Determined to give her children opportunities she herself did not have, she worked tirelessly — balancing farming, household responsibilities, and caregiving. Her days were long and demanding, but she carried them with resilience.
Laitlin’s commitment to her community did not go unnoticed. She was invited to join the local women’s committee and later became the leader of the Seng Kynthei in Nongshillong. Her ability to listen, empathise, and mobilise women made her a trusted figure.
A turning point came in 2018 when she joined North East Network (NEN) as a community mobiliser. This new role opened doors she had never imagined. Through workshops, outreach programmes, and community engagement, she discovered not just new skills — but a new sense of confidence and purpose.
“Before NEN, I only knew how to take care of my family. After joining, I learned how to take care of my community too,” she shares.
With NEN, Laitlin began facilitating discussions on women’s rights, health, livelihoods, and sustainable practices. She played a vital role in bringing women together, helping them recognise their collective strength.
She was seen not only as a devoted mother, but as a respected leader and changemaker. Today, her four children are growing into responsible individuals shaped by her values of honesty, hard work, and compassion.
Laitlin’s story is a powerful reminder that leadership is built through action, courage, and heart. Her story reminds us that strength lies within each of us. No matter where we begin, we all have the power to lead, to rise, and to create meaningful change — in our own lives and in our communities.
