In a series of sessions held across Assam—Mongoldoi, Kamrup (R), and Golaghat—over 108 participants gathered to honour and learn from the remarkable journey and the resilient spirit of Dr. Birubala Rabha. Birubala Rabha was an activist from Goalpara, Assam, who tirelessly raised her voice against witch-hunting. She also led an organisation – Mission Birubala location which raises awareness about the dangers associated with witch-hunting practices.
These sessions, organised by NEN and led by resource persons – Dr. Chitralekha Baruah, Mamoni Saikia, and Kumoli Rabha, brought together youth and support group members to delve into her relentless struggle against the deeply ingrained practice of witch-hunting in Assam. Another highlight of the sessions was the screening of the documentary ‘Birubala Rabha: Strongest Voice Against Witch Hunting’, which provided a poignant glimpse into her journey. Participants also engaged in discussions that explored the intricate connections between witch-hunting and patriarchal power relations, including issues related to land and property rights.
The sessions not only shed light on her fearless spirit but also inspired participants to carry forward her vision. By sharing her story, the programme emphasised that the fight against such oppressive practices is far from over, and it is up to the next generation to continue the work she began.
