The barefoot counsellor initiative led by North East Network has played a vital role in supporting survivors of domestic violence across rural Assam. Through community-based counselling, psychosocial support, and referrals to legal and government services, trained grassroots women leaders have helped create safe and accessible spaces for women facing violence and discrimination. Operating through Gramin Mahila Kendras in districts such as Kamrup, Darrang, Dhemaji, Sonitpur, Udalguri and Golaghat, these centres continue to strengthen community awareness, survivor support, and women’s leadership at the grassroots level.
