As a preparatory towards the International Year of Millet in 2023, millet festivals series has become an important platform to bond communities, to revive, promote and bring together various stakeholders in addressing the current challenge of our time such as. climate change, food security issues that our communities are facing or being impacted with.
The Millets festival was celebrated at Shamator Town in collaboration with Self Employed Women Association (SEWA) and the Millet Network of India (MINI), the occasion was graced by Thuoisie Phoji, The Deputy Commissioner, Shamator. Which was followed by another event at Meluri Village organised by the Community in collaboration with North East Network (NEN) and MINI on 6th and 31st August 2022 respectively. The festival was celebrated under a common theme “Celebrating common Heritage for a Shared, Resilient Future”. The Sub-Divisional Agriculture Officer (SDAO) of Meluri – Phrumasie Nyuthe graced the festival as the special guest organised at Meluri village.
Around 350 participants consisting of different villages, Government departments, Administration, Community elders and leaders, youths, students and women took part in the event. The festival was marked with Agrobiodiversity display, traditional crafts & handlooms, cultural performances, sharing of Millets and its cultural significance by the communities and A Farmers Markets.
