With the aim to raise consciousness about and promote conservation of earth’s natural resources, encourage the sustainable use of earth’s limited natural resources, every year World Nature Conservation Day is observed on the 28th of July.
The rampant destruction and exploitation of nature in India has brought upon unforgiving consequences for all. The ravaging floods in Assam have now become an annual occurrence and are getting worse every yearly; encroachment in forest lands and water bodies being one of the main causes. The recent explosion of a well at the Oil India Limited Oilfield at Baghjan, is an example of human’s irresponsible attitude and actions towards the environment that has adversely affected the biodiversity of the region. Another example of a very real repercussion of human’s exploitation of nature is the current Novel Corona Virus Pandemic that has spread throughout the whole world. The diseases is said to have originated from an animal and it has been found that when forests are destroyed, the chances for transmission of animal-to-human diseases; a direct result of humans throwing nature off balance. Indiscriminate coal mining leads to large scale deforestation and completely alter the natural ecosystem of an area, an activity that has been carried out throughout the country, both legally and illegally and against which many have raised their voices.
People are realizing that nature is not something external or separate, in reality it us who are a part of nature and owe our very existence to it. Every action taken by every individual on the planet has a very real and direct affect on the environment. The need for sustainable use of resources is now more than ever.
North East Network Assam, had mobilized 20 budding youths from Darrang and Kamrup districts for a workshop on how to make posters on various issues of conservation and sustainability to observe World Nature Conservation Day. The workshop was facilitated by prominent artist Mr. Nikileshwar Baruah. The posters were painted by the students, who are studying in classes 7 to 10. This activity was intended to convey the message for us to take immediate actions to ensure a sustainable tomorrow for all. This has been another step towards NEN’s journey in spreading the message of the need for harmony between Nature and Humans.
