Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a pervasive issue, affecting many children, particularly girls. However, very few of these cases are reported, and even fewer perpetrators are convicted. Perpetrators committing CSA are also rarely questioned by families, societies and communities. To address this bleak reality, North East Network (NEN) took the initiative with local governance bodies, partner NGOs and communities; and conducted an Interface cum Awareness Meeting on the Prevention of Children from Child Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012 on 15th February, 2024 in Nizdola, Udalguri.
The meeting started with Anurita Pathak Hazarika, Executive Director (in-charge) of NEN, sharing the objective of the interface, highlighting the prevalence of CSA in societies, and how NEN’s Gramin Mahila Kendra can provide support in such cases. The resource person Miguel Das, Executive Director, UTSAH, provided valuable insights about the legal framework and provisions of the POCSO Act 2012. In this interactive session, participants shared their personal experiences and queries were raised regarding the provisions of this Act. The Gaon Pradhan of Nizdola emphasised the importance of learning about these legal provisions, while Lalit Boro shared how children’s homes are being run by ROSS NGO in Udalguri. The meeting also saw the presence of representatives from the All Assam Students Union, VDP members, youth members, women peer leaders, and NEN support group members, among others.
This gathering, attended by approximately 70 participants, provided a valuable platform for raising dialogues with different stakeholders about practices aimed at preventing child sexual abuse. With thought-provoking posters and engaging dialogues, it also initiated conversations that can help communities ensure a safe and secure childhood for every child.
