The word domestic violence is now ubiquitous in nature, with the lock down in the scenario one will never fail to see this word especially in reports, news and statistics. Given the situation, our outreach workers have been working nonstop around the clock battling this oppression by conducting several awareness programmes in the urban areas of East Khasi Hills and villages of West Khasi Hills Districts to raise consciousness among the masses on the ills of domestic violence and to impart knowledge on the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005.
Menstrual hygiene is not a much talked about topic amongst adolescent girls and women alike because of the stigma attached to it. North East Network has initiated several programmes on menstrual health and hygiene for adolescent girls imparting them about the importance of cleanliness during menstruation and also informing them to contact/consult doctors and ANM within their PHCs or the ASHA. Owing to the pandemic, menstrual hygiene kits were not available to many. We have been distributing sanitary pads that were donated to us by Procter and Gamble, Mumbai especially to girls and young women belonging to families of low socio-economic background in the society
“Teenage pregnancy”, is one of the issues that has been intervened by the health department along with the Dorbar Shnong and several NGOs for many years now. We are all aware of the multifaceted consequences that it will have on teenage girls. From suffering from health complications to dropping out from school, teenage pregnancy is a social issue that is much prevalent even today despite numerous interventions by many. Our Outreach workers through their extensive awareness raising programmes have been trying to open the eyes of parents and adolescent girls and we are hopeful that gradually change will be achieved.
