Concerned citizens, educational institutions, women’s and youth groups came together at 1 pm on 1 January 2015 to form a Human Chain for Peace to raise consciousness on the many senseless acts of violence across the state at an event held at Gauhati Club Circle. The Human Chain united in songs on peace by Bhupen Hazarika and ”O Mur Apunar Desh” and pledged, YES to PEACE and NO to VIOLENCE. The event was co-organized by NEN, Assam Mahila Samata Society, Asom Mahila Sangha, Sadou Asom Pragatishil Nari Sanstha and TISS (Guwahati Campus).
The gathering condemned any act of violence on any person in the society. It appealed to government to ensure safety and security of common people at all times for peaceful and dignified life. Establishment of permanent Peace Committees in all districts of Assam is recommended for pre-emptive action to prevent conflict.
