NEN actively participated in the XVII National Conference of the Indian Association for Women’s Studies, which revolved around the theme “Women’s Studies and Women’s Movement: Challenges and Resilience.” This conference, held from September 7th to 10th, 2023, in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, served as a vibrant platform for multifaceted feminist dialogues and discussions; where students, scholars, activists, and academics came together.
During this four-day conference, North East Network made significant contributions in varied capacities. Monisha Behal, one of the co-founders of NEN, attended the XVII National Conference as a member of the Executive Committee (EC). Meanwhile, Anurita P. Hazarika, the Executive Director in charge of NEN, actively coordinated paper presentations in sub-theme 8 of the conference titled “Human Rights Violation: Gender-Based Violence and Resistance.”
Another highlight of NEN’s involvement in the conference was the launch of the “Gender Responsive Shelter Homes: A Trainers Manual” by LCN Network on September 9th, 2023. The manual was launched together by North East Network, Jagori, Ekta, Action India, Nazariya, Visthar, Vimochana and Sangama. This manual aims at strengthening rights-based, intersectional perspectives among shelter management and staff members, representatives of NGOs and other institutions working against gender-based violence.
Another milestone of NEN in the conference was achieved with the exhibition ‘Sisters of Tezpur’. This historical and archival exhibition showcased the Tezpur Mahila Samiti and its contributions, offering a comprehensive overview of the women’s struggles in Assam. The exhibition explored women’s history using the medium of photographs, notebooks, textiles and was widely praised by visitors. Curated by researcher Anidrita Saikia, the exhibition was co-organised by Tezpur Mahila Samiti, IAWS and North East Network.
Through this participation, North East Network joined the collective effort for women’s rights alongside numerous academic institutions and feminist organizations working throughout the nation.
