North East Network (NEN) is a women’s rights organisation that links with rural and urban women, and civil society organisations on issues of development, social and gender justice and environmental justice in Northeast India. NEN recognises the potential and rights of every individual and child as crucial, irrespective of race, colour, caste, ethnic origins, different abilities, linguistic groups, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, marital/civil/family status, gender, age or social grouping, towards collective change in society.

NEN was set up as part of the preparatory process for the Beijing World Conference on Women in 1995. In the 27 years since its establishment, NEN has become a platform to address women’s human rights both in the Northeast and across India. It is one of the first organisations in India’s NER to combine activism with advocacy from a liberal feminist perspective, conveying critical gender issues through dialogue and dissemination.

NEN’s current work extends across three northeastern states i.e., Assam, Meghalaya and Nagaland. It is headquartered in Assam, with its registered office at Guwahati, a project office at Tezpur, Assam and branch offices at Shillong (Meghalaya), Chizami (Nagaland) and Kohima (Nagaland).

NEN is also part of Lila.help which is an initiative from the Global Network Of Women’s Shelters – an alliance of regional shelter networks around the world. We strive to provide a safe listening ear, understand what survivors need and be part of a broader crisis-help network which can answer questions or call for help.
